The net-zero university — hybrid storage systems at the heart of a large microgrid

With over 70,000 students, Monash University is the largest university in Australia. Its 135-million-dollar Net Zero Initiative aims to ensure a completely independent power supply using solely renewable energies by 2030. This is no small feat, seeing as the university welcomes over 40,000 visitors every day. Thousands of rooms must be air-conditioned and lit, and large-scale scientific equipment, as well as electric vehicle charging stations, must be supplied with electricity.

To make efficient use of the electricity from its 2 MWp photovoltaic system, the university installed an innovative storage system that forms the heart of a microgrid. A 900-kWh vanadium redox flow system and a TESVOLT lithium-ion battery bank work in tandem to create an unprecedented hybrid energy system.
